CAUSATIVE VERBS

1.         Defenition:

Causative verbs show that somebody/something is indirectly responsible for an action. The subject doesn't perform the action itself, but causes someone/something else to do it instead. For example: Yesterday I had my hair cut. 

I didn't cut my own hair, but I made someone else do it for me instead - I "caused" them to cut my hair.

2.         Kinds & Forms:

Ø  Make, This construction means "to force someone to do something."

FORM [Subject + make + object I + Bare Infinitive + Object II]

        Examples:

·         My teacher made me apologize for what I had said.

·         The teacher always makes the children stay in their class.

Ø  Have, This construction means "to give someone the responsibility to do something." The clause following have, may be active or passive.

FORM :

Active [Subject + have + object I + Bare Infinitive + object II]

·         I had the mechanic check the car.

·         John is having his father contact the officials.

Passive [Subject + have + Object II + past participle + by + object I]

·         I had the car checked by mechanic.

·         John is Having the officials contacted by his father.

Ø   Get, This construction usually means "to convince to do something" or "to trick someone into doing something."

FORM:

Active       [Subject + get + Object I + To Infinitive + Object II]

·      They will get me to finish their homework.

·      Mary got john to wash the car.

Passive      [Subject + get + Object II + past participle + by + object I]

·      They will get their homework finished by me.

·      Mary got the car washed by John.

Ø   Let, This construction means "to allow someone to do something", but it is not actually causative.

FORM [Subject + Let + Object I + Bare Infinitive + Object II]

Examples:

·         Angkasa let his daughter drive his new car.

·         The teacher let the students leave class early.
